First Drafts

Hey everybody, it's been a while since my last post. I'm picking this project back up after some time. I had neglected this blog but it's time to get back on the horse. I'm going to share the first draft of the book in pdf form. This is what I presented as a proof of concept.

Walker

Refining. Doing some more character work.

Esmer

Here's a quick Esmer concept. I'm playing around with layering on the clothing, The sandier the environment it's probably helpful to have extra cloth. I also haven't quite decided how hot the landscape is, if it's truly a desert or just certain portions of it are that way. Either way it should be clear that the more layering you see in their clothing the more experienced, or decorated an Esmer should appear. After all they only come in with what ever they had from their burrows but as the years pass they might pick more up, for practical purposes or as gifts from the people of the valley.

Color Study

Took an old interior and repainted it, to see what if I've made any progress. and I'd argue I have.

Here's a version of the book cover. I've really gotten a lot faster when it comes to creating illustrations like the. The Level UP sessions that Darek Zabrocki, Wojtek Fus, and Jonas De Ro do on youtube really taught me a whole bunch. I wish there was more time, to tighten things like this up but gallery exhibit day approaches.

The Print

As I approach a complete manuscript, I've done a bit more in the way of illustrating. Here now are two quick paintings of one scene in the story.

So knocking out some more scenes from the story. Here is baKhulu entering that Cave where Nabi is found. Next is Nabi and Temba on a Journey in the Mountains.

Small Update

The book is getting closer and closer to print. So I'm going to be making a few more posts and editing so you can all get a better idea of the design work. For now here's an illustration of Nabi in the cradle that baKhulu discovers him in.

Story Thumbnails.

A small update, expect several finished images as the book approaches it's finish.

These are a few quick compositions for story based thumbnails that will accompany the book.

New Postcard Image

Lots of progress made with the layout now it's down to just rendering a crap ton of illustrations.
Here's a update postcard image. Decided to render out Nabi, MaNoma and Aife. These are relatively complete designs. For the sake of time saving and simplicity I kept the palette simple. Did I mention a logo?
